Daniel walked down a corridor of the lab. He had snuck out in the middle of the night and made his way to the lab in order to look for something. He relied more on his sense of smell than anything, as he didn't really know where he was headed.
The trail led him around a corner and to a closed door that sat alone at the end of the hall. In his hand he gripped a knife which he had stolen from Gustav's office not much earlier. He opened the door as quietly as possible and looked into the darkness. Two yellow eyes stared back at him.
"Any particular reason you're sneaking into my room in the middle of the night?" A soothing voice asked. "And what's with the knife? Surely you didn't think you could just walk in here and kill me in my sleep."
Daniel's eyes soon adjusted to the darkness and he saw a rather large wolf sitting calmly in the center of a large room. So much for that idea. Daniel thought. "I was just... looking for treasure," he lied. The wolf clearly didn't buy it.
"A knife doesn't make for the best treasure hunting tool," she told him. "And besides, this room is rather empty."
Daniel looked around. She was right. "Oh well, I suppose I'd better look elsewhere," he said, still trying to play it off like he was looking for treasure.
"Come now, you went through all this trouble and woke me, and now you're just going to leave? The least you could do is entertain me with a fight."
Daniel sighed. Without the element of surprise he was at a disadvantage.
"Either that or I could just follow you home and kill you, along with your little girlfriend and everyone else in sight."
Daniel considered that option. Dark was still asleep, and it wasn't likely she'd be able to wake up in time to fight a massive wolf. "Fine. I'll fight you."
The wolf sat up. "One last thing before you die. What is your name young one?" She asked.
Now doesn't really seem like the time for introductions. Daniel thought. "It's Daniel," he told her.
"Sonya," the wolf introduced herself. "Now that that's out of the way..." She suddenly hurled herself at Daniel as if he was a piece of prey and he barely managed to roll out of the way.
"Are you trying to kill me?!?"
"You were trying to kill me," she replied calmly.
Daniel looked at the knife in his hand. He hadn't thought this through.
"I'd stay focused if I were you. That is if you value your life."
Daniel ducked just in time to avoid Sonya's claws. He slashed at her face with the knife. It connected with her face and left a long cut. This was followed by a low growl.
Daniel backed away slowly. Sonya's eyes were filled with hatred and it was clear that she was no long messing around. Daniel raised his knife defensively and got ready for her next attack. What happened next was just a blur. Nothing could have prepared Daniel for the flurry of attacks, but he did his best to block and attack back. It went on for a while, but finally Sonya wore herself out. Daniel was cut it many places, but he seemed determined to keep on fighting.
Sonya looked up at him. "You... You're not afraid?"
"Of course I am, but I realized something. If I don't stop you here you'll just cause suffering for countless others."
"I see." There was a flash of movement and the knife flew from Daniel's hand. "Good luck fighting without a weapon."
Daniel's hand was bleeding where she had hit him. He thought about what he was supposed to do now. Sonya pounced at him and he quickly dodged. He placed his hand on her shoulder and a jolt of electricity was sent through her, temporarily paralyzing her. He looked around for something and found a pipe coming out of a nearby wall. He rushed over to it and placed his hand on it. He began conducting heat though it until it began to glow. The metal began to melt about a foot above and below his hand.
Daniel pulled the pipe free and spun around to see Sonya leaping at him again. Without even thinking he lunged out with the still red pipe. It pierced her chest.
"What a shame." Sonya said before coughing. "I never intended for it to end like this. See you in the next life, young one." Her voice seemed oddly affectionate. With that he eyes glazed over and she died. Daniel looked at her, wondering what she meant by that.
He put that thought aside for now. It was late and he was tired. He made his way back to the cave and went to sleep.
